Walking guide and safety information

Prepare for your Walk

The key to an enjoyable and safe Queensland walking experience is to be prepared. Follow these five steps to a successful adventure:

STEP 1: Choose your walk wisely. To ensure a positive experience select a walk within your capability. Work up to more difficult walks later.

STEP 2: Research your destination. Pick up a brochure from the Queensland National Parks and Wildlife Service and consult guidebooks. For specific questions contact the regional visitor information centre or National Park's office. Be prepared to change your plans if your first choice of destination is unsuitable.

STEP 3: Choose a walk and obtain a detailed map. Be sure to allocate enough time to complete the walk without rushing; heed suggested walking times. Overnight walkers should plan where to camp and book their campsites.

STEP 4: Choose the right gear.

  • Backpacks: For day walks a backpack with a capacity around 30-litres is ideal. For overnight walks choose a comfortable rucksack around 60- to 80-litres in size.
  • Safety: Pack a first aid kit, map, compass and torch.
  • Comfort: Always take rainwear and extra clothing in case of poor weather, even if the forecast is good. Wear quick-dry synthetic clothing instead of cotton T-shirts and jeans. Wear a hat and sunscreen to avoid sunburn. Take insect repellent to avoid bites.
  • Footwear: Running shoes are fine for walks up to half a day. For longer walks buy a pair of lightweight walking shoes or boots from a specialist bushwalking store. To avoid blisters wear-in footwear before heading bush, wear moderately padded wool socks and cover sore points immediately with sports tape.
  • Food: Pack more food than you would normally eat. Common bushwalking fare is muesli bars, fruit and nuts for snacks and sandwiches for lunch. Overnight walkers add muesli for breakfast and pasta with dried vegetables for dinner. Carry twice as much water as you think you will need.
  • Environment: Always carry toilet paper and a lightweight trowel for when nature calls. Carry a resealable bag to carry out sanitary items.
  • Overnight trips: Add a lightweight tent, sleeping bag, sleeping-mat, fuel stove and cooking gear.
  • For more information on getting equipped consult specialist books and magazines such as the Adventure Gear Guide.

STEP 5: Tell a reliable person where you are going and when you expect to return. Remember to check in with them on your return.
